Types of Treatment: Psychodynamic Therapy
What is Psychodynamic Therapy?Psychodynamic approach to understanding human experience takes into account past history and how previous relationships, experiences, and unconscious processes may inform how a person presents today. Within the therapeutic alliance, a client might “play out” a past relationship and use the therapist as a sounding board. This opens the opportunity for a “corrective emotional experience,” essentially bringing out awareness of the interpersonal behavior and exploring other possibilities or avenues in a relationship that may feel more secure or supportive. The client then can try out the new interactions in her other relationships. Past may inform the present, but it does not necessarily determine the future.
